Water Land uses clever cut-outs and a relaxed palette of blues, yellows, ochres and some spots of red to show readers links between ten major bodies of water and landforms — bay, cape, strait and isthmus to name a few.  Included at the end are definitions and examples of each along with an expanding map where each of the bodies of water and landforms are marked.  Head over to this Instagram post and scroll right for a couple of videos of the book in action.

Water Land: Land and Water Forms Around the World was written and illustrated by Christy Hale and published by Roaring Brook Press.

Red Sky at Night

Almost everyone has a old weather adage from their childhood that they can remember grown-ups quoting.  Red Sky at Night is full of them — “clues in nature to predict the weather” that have been passed down through time and generations.  Elly MacKay’s art is a beautiful blend of paper and ink and she weaves this collection of weather aphorisms together with a lovely visual narrative about the day in the life of a family.  Her intensely hued soulful skies will stay with you.  The book’s back matter explains the origins of each of the aphorisms.

Does anyone out there have any weather folklore or wisdom from their childhood to share?  This saying from the book resonates with our grayish week here so far — “The more rain, the more rest.  Fair weather’s not always best.”

Red Sky at Night was written and illustrated by Elly MacKay and published by Tundra Books.

these colors are bananas

Three cheers for inventive and intelligent books about color.  This one asks young readers to notice the colors in the world around them.  It asks them to see things in more ways, other ways beyond the typical and beyond what they’re used to.  Frankly, we’re crazy about this new book and it for sure lives up to its name — it’s bananas.  And categorically brilliant.  While we search for more superlatives to describe our love for this book, check our Instagram Stories for a preview of it and its fantastic interactive feature.

These Colors Are Bananas was created by Tamara Shopsin and Jason Fulford and published by Phaidon in collaboration with the Whitney Museum of American Art. It’ll be out soon on May 30.

drawn together

Drawn Together is a tremendous story about the generational, cultural and communication gap between a boy and his grandfather, and the shared love of art and storytelling that one day bridges the profound chasm between the two.  The story’s words and art are richly nuanced and layered and there’s a lot to feel and process with this one, especially if you can relate with your own family relationships.  Even if that’s not the case, it’ll still be a beautiful, moving and deeply impactful read.

From author Minh  on what inspired Drawn Together:

“Drawn Together was inspired by the relationship with my grandparents, but especially my paternal grandfather. There was always a language gap between us — my Vietnamese unfortunately peaked when I was about 5 — so I often felt that our relationship was defined by all the things that we couldn't say to each other.  In talking to Dan, he actually had a similar relationship with his grandmother, so he was coming from a similar place. This book is about the desire to find common ground with someone despite the things that may initially separate you, whether that's a language gap, a generational divide, or cultural differences. In this case, when the grandfather and grandson discover a mutual love of art, they ‘see each other for the first time’ and can finally bridge the divide that had been separating them. It's been very heartwarming to share this story and very humbling to then have people share their own stories about their relationships with their loved ones. I hope that this book resonates with readers and maybe even inspires a few to find new connections with the important people in their lives. Happy reading!”
